Personal care, home care, companion care, and homemaking care are all names that can be applied to the type of care done in the client's home to promote independence and wellness. There is an important distinction to make between medical and non-medical home care; medical home care includes skilled medical interventions, whereas non-medical care emphasizes personal support and assistance. In this post we will be discussing non-medical home care; recognizing the signs that it is right for you, the benefits of home care, and insurance coverage.

Signs Home Health Could Help

Physical Limitations

Whether you are experiencing physical limitations while healing from a procedure, or you are noticing that you are less mobile than you used to be, home health may be a good fit for you.

Chronic Health Issues

Existing or new conditions can lead to a need for ongoing support. Because chronic health issues can change over time, working with a home health agency can be beneficial as the care is tailored to the client and can be done with whatever frequency is necessary.

Recent Hospitalization or Illness

During the time directly following a hospitalization or illness, you may need some additional help with a number of tasks such as bathing, cooking, cleaning, or pet care. Home care aids help clients with tasks like these tasks and more!

Social Isolation

Living alone or spending long stretches of the day alone can lead to social isolation, which is not good for your mental or physical health. There is a reason that home care is often referred to as companion care; companionship is at the core of what we do! Whether you are looking for someone to transport and accompany you to the grocery store, or just spend some time watching tv with you, home health can offer a solution!

How Home Care Benefits the Client

Personalized Care

The client's care plan is frequently reviewed and updated to ensure that they are receiving the level of care that best meets their needs.

Comfort of Home Environment

The comfort and familiarity of your own home is the perfect environment for healing if you have recently had a medical procedure done. Home care can also be a key part of a client's plan to 'age in place,' meaning to live in your own home as you get older, rather than move to an assisted living facility or nursing home.

Enhanced Independence and Quality of Life

Your independence is our priority! With personalized assistance tailored to your specific needs, you can maintain control over your daily routines and decisions. This support not only fosters a sense of autonomy but also contributes to an improved quality of life, allowing you to engage in activities you enjoy and maintain social connections.

Family Involvement

Home health aids can help to educate and train family members to involve them in the clients care if that is part of their care plan.

Payment Sources for Personal Home Care

Medicaid Waivers: Some Medicaid pathways offer coverage for home health.

Long-Term Care Insurance: Long term care insurance is separate from standard health or life insurance that can be purchased from an insurance agent or broker.

AAA Grant Program (in Indiana): If you do not have insurance coverage work reach out to your local AAA agency to see if you are eligible for a state-funded grant. The northwest Indiana AAA is CoAction.

Private Pay: Because many standard insurances do not cover personal care, paying privately is very common. The rate varies depending on many factors but the national average rate is $33 per hour.

Whether you are experiencing physical limitations, social isolation, or recovering from a medical procedure, home care could be a great option to improve independence and quality of life.
